A good day for Kentucky basketball related news. Eloy Vargas, the 6'10" 4 star 2008 recruit has stepped in to fill the PF/size vacancy on Kentucky's roster. He was originally ranked as the #26 overall player in 2008. Vargas played his freshman season with the Florida Gators and had limited playing time and limited impact before leaving Billy D to play JuCo ball last year. With his JuCo team he averaged 25pts and 15 boards a game.
Vargas is a bit thin for his size at 210lbs, but will step into a tie for the tallest player on the team. Eloy has been rumored to be in academic trouble during his stint in college and given he can remain eligible he should give Calipari another option to play at center. However, I imagine he will be placed at the 4 spot with Kanter at the 5 and start immediately should Cal decide to go with the large lineup. If Cal goes for the smaller roles, look for Vargas to be the first off the bench to spell Kanter.
Below is some video featuring Vargas from 18 months ago.
