Mariotti Throws a Final Shot at Coach Cal

Jay Mariotti of the Chicago Sun Times gets the final word during today's Around the Horn. Mariotti chooses to use his 30 seconds away from Woody Paige's shadow to bash Kentucky Coach John Calipari. He chooses to let Coach Cal know he is "doing it the wrong way" and also voices an opinion that "everyone is tired of it"... the it being the fact Calipari is getting one-and-done players.

While I may agree with Mariotti that it is more fun to watch a player grow during a 3-4 tenure, if the kids Cal pulls in are anything like the ones in 2009, I am perfectly fine with his style. The players that leave after one year will be making their living getting paid millions for that one year of school. Cal teaches them their ultimate success, the point of going to college in the first place. You can't say Mariotti wouldn't have left Ohio University for the Chicago Sun after one year for millions.

Well, you can say that, but we know it wouldn't be true.

  2. YOU SAID: Cal teaches them their ultimate success, the point of going to college in the first place. I'm sorry your point is???? Calipari teaches them that college is the last rung to millions....dont go to class dont get good grades dont give a damn about where you go because it wont matter....and Calipari will use your pro status to get other kids to forgo education for money. It cheapen the NCAA and wrecks the NCAA basketball game that we all love....the formula only works if you win the Big Game which to my calculations Calipari has not. So explain to me what was so fun about being the most hyped college basketball team with the most talent and not getting into at least the final four???

  3. Explain to me how a rule that the NCAA has instituted (the one and done rule) is Calipari's or any other coaches fault? Cal has come out time and time again against the rule, stating that kids need to have the opportunity to go pro after their senior year of high school. The NCAA cheapens and wrecks itself with it's own set of rules. Don't blame the coaches, blame the NCAA.

  4. The one and done rule is an NBA rule, not NCAA. The NBA is turning the NCAA into a developmental league for players that should just be able to go pro after high school.

  5. Again, how is that the fault of an NCAA coach? The NCAA allows the rule to go into effect. They could put their foot down if they wanted to. I would venture to say that the NCAA has a bit of clout.

I'm not arguing with you T-Ferg, I totally agree with you. I was just furthering my point to louavulfan35.

  6. I think the NCAA is over run with guys that want to squash coaches and run over programs that they want to bully. But to teach kids....they are kids afterall to grab the brass ring and not protect themselves is wrong. The rule stinks...and Lebron, Garnett, and others have shown just out of high school works....but it only works for high caliber, gifted athletes like John Wall, D. Cousins....there are over 100 kids leaving school to pursue money. There should be something that works for all. Making them go to a campus for a year is not the solve....they are taking scholarship money from needy kids and space needed by some other deserving kid....Thats all Im saving...whew

  7. I agree with you louavulfan, that's why I thought your shots at Cal were unfair. Marquis Teague is an almost for sure one and done guy as is Michael Chandler and Louisville fans did not seem to have much of a problem with them going to play for the Cardinals until they decommitted.WOuld you have said Rick Pitino is ruining the game if those two guys would have stuck with Louisville and then left after one year or would you have complained about the rule? I would say that you probably would have gone after the rule and not Pitino.

It is a stupid rule. If a rule like that is going to be instituted then they need to make it at least a 2 year rule instead of a one year rule. If it's one year then don't have it at all, it makes no sense.
