Your Purple Drank: News of the Day

So lots of people mix up a drink now and then. They will poor some Makers Mark bourbon and coke, they will mix sweet n sour with whiskey, or they might just raid their liquor cabinets and jumble a bunch of crap left over for some crazy college party concoction.

What never cross my mind was to go to the medicine cabinet, find cough syrup and start blending that in with my drinks. But that's what the peeps are doing these days in the dirty dirty South. This led to the Purple Drank craze which is usually cough syrup, mixed with ingredients such as 7Up and pieces of Jolly Rancher candy.

JaMarcus Russell, the 1st overall draft pick by the Oakland Raiders was arrested as part of a drug sting earlier this year for the possession of gallons of Purple Drank, aka sizzurp, lean, syrup, drank, barre, purple jelly, and Texas tea.

Russell admitted yesterday that he tested positive for the sizzurp in 2007, a test that could cost Russell the $10 million he is owed by Oakland. Russell says that it was during his hold-out and that he had a doctor's prescription, it just wasn't a team doctor. But on to the non-felony news:

  • The newly acquired Miami Dolphin wide receiver, Brandon Marshall, has said that if the NFL can't come to an agreement with the players and ultimately end in a lock-out, that he will end up in the NBA. We've heard this before from Randy Moss and others, but Marshall is the next generation of diva WR, so only time - and money - will tell if Marshall makes the grade.
  • Demarcus Cousins turns 20 years old today. He will apparently be stuck in the airport due to flight delays heading back from Washington DC. While he is 20 today, he will forever be a Kentucky fan favorite. Happy Birthday Big Cuz.
  • Sports Illustrated has selected Kentucky to beat Louisville and go undefeated in it's non-conference schedule. SI also selected U of L to go 1-7 in the Big East, 4-8 overall, UK to go 4-4 in the SEC and 8-4 overall and Indiana 2-6 in the Big Ten and 6-6 overall. Looks like another trip to the Music City could be in store!
  • The Cats will take to the Canadian court Sunday night and the Big Blue Sports Network, FOX Sports South and FOX Sports Ohio are all carrying all 3 UK basketball games. Tune in to see a sneak peek of the 1st round of the 2011 NBA draft.
The SportsThat crew will be turning out in full force at the newly opened Tilted Kilt, in Louisville today. Come out, say Happy Birthday to 2hot2handle 1/2 of T-Ferg, and me... celebrating the birthdays from Aug 9, 11, and 12!
