Charlie Strong Tries to Even Out Expectations

Tom Jurich: "Some words of advice. Stay away from Rick Pitino and The Boys. If you meet any sultry blonds in Porcinis or any other restaurant, run as fast as you can."

With all of the Little Birdie fans expecting the impossible, like Louisville having a winning record, coach Strong decided during his press conference to bring the overzealous fans back down to earth. He was at the Mariott to answer questions at the Louisville Football kickoff luncheon.

The coach was optimistic and stated that the program is different than it was when he became coach in December. He talked a lot about how he will emphasize the importance of academics and then he listed the core values that he expects the players to follow:

  1. Honesty

  2. Treat Women With Respect (Are we listening Quick Rick? And wasn't corner back Johhny Patrick recently arrested for assaulting his girlfriend? Is he still on the team? Yes.)

  3. No Drugs (Nyquil and Flintstone Vitamins not included)

  4. No Stealing

  5. No Weapons (Louisville football and basketball players are notorious for brushes with the law. He probably had to make this rule especially for incoming thug, I mean Freshman, DeMar Dorsey)

Strong was very motivational and seemed to really want to get the football team turned back around in the right direction. His last lines were very revealing, "I can't make any promises here. I can't say how many games we are going to win, but I can say this to you: we will be an exciting football team. We will play hard-guys understand-we will play hard."

No doubt that he will have them ready to play but I think even Strong realizes what he has as a team. He spoke of how they are small on defense, the quarterback position in up in the air, how it may not be this year or even next year until they improve, but he made sure to express that there will be passion for the game.

Now don't get me wrong, I actually like Charlie Strong. I give him a hard time on here but I honestly think that he is a good man and a good coach. But the fact is that the Cards are still going to stink. You can't turn a football team around over night, it just does not happen. Basketball is a different story. There are about 12-15 guys on a team where there is over 40 in football. A basketball team can rely on one guy to be a superstar and lead a team to wins, a football team needs an overall effort from everyone. UofL has some decent players at certain positions but overall they are bad.

Dirty Bird fans take a lesson from your coach and chill out. I understand the excitement for the season but stop living in the delusion that THIS YEAR will be the year your team will be good. Give Strong time to work and to get his players in before you start making grand proclamations. You might have to Stand Strong for a few seasons. Knowing Louisville fans they won't be able to Stand Strong through the first half.

I've said it before and I will say it again: Charlie Strong is not suiting up to play any position for the Cardinals. He can motivate but he can't make the talent become any more than it already is.

  1. A UK fan talking about tempered expectations??? HA HA HA HA -- that's some funny stuff! Cardinal fans have every right to be excited about this upcoming season, much like UK did last year with Coach Cheat, I mean Calipari.

And where do you get off calling Dorsey a thug? That's some shotty journalism right there. As a Card fan, I can only hope this "thug" blows up a UK receiver on a crossing route, bringing out his "thug" side.

Another football post from Boogie, and another one about the Cards. As a "journalist", I'd think that you could come up with some better content than "Cards are still going to stink."

Where's the article on the Joker's kickoff luncheon? You want to bash the Cards, but didn't one of UK's starting linemen get ruled ineligible due to bad grades? He must have been hanging out with Duh-Marcus and Bledsoe last Spring where going to class was optional.

I REALLY can't wait until September 4th so that the "Dirty" Cards can put the smack down on the "Pussy" Cats. And even more exciting will be the BS post from Boogie blaming everything under the sun, but not acknowledging that the Cats aren't very good this year either.

  2. Poor Boogie.....you are just shaking in your john wall ugly shoes....because you know we almost beat you with the world's lousiest(?) coach the past two years. And now we are on the verge of building our program back to being respectable and it scares the POO out of you!! UofL has plenty to build on and can put a hurting on several teams, but as a Fanatic I believe that we can be proud of this team no matter what happens on the field bc we have a coach who cares whether they go to class, what grades they get and how they carry themselves....he is not spouting the all mighty dollar in their faces, he is a builder of men....not PROS. So on the 4th.....I will be looking for you....and the blue cloud that will be raining on your parade!!

  3. Thunderstick: I believe that I have repeatedly stated my resons why the Cards are going to stink this year and even have them in this post. If you missed them, I suggest you read it again.

As for Dorsey, come on. Multiple arrests, including assualt with a deadly weapon. If it was anyone else you would be calling them a thug as well. P.S. He's a freshman.

As for our expectations on the basketball team: Please read paragraph #5 where I outline why it is easier to rebuild a crappy basketball team than it is to rebuild a lousy football team.

Monster Mash had already covered Mister Cobble being ruled inelegible and I mentioned it as well.

As for Sept. 4th I can't wait either. Papa Johns will be empty as usual.

Louavalfan35: Nothing Lousiville has done has ever scared me.

I also stated that I like Charlie Strong and I think he is a good coach but this is not the year.

And both of you skipped the part about Johnny Patrick. I thought Strong's morality rules stated no abuse towards women yet Patrick remains on the team and has yet to be suspeded. I guess those rules are flexible for some players.

  4. Johnny Patrick's gf slips and falls, hits her head on a table and he is guilty of abuse...hmmmmm maybe he needs to take all the furniture out of the apartment.....He never touched her....HENCE no arrest, no record, and no suspension! The rules Charlie sets are followed he just waits to get the truth before rendering his decisions....might be a good rule of thumb!
