Signing Day Eve News and Notes

The Kragthorpe Era: When signing day in Duh Ville was comical.

Tomorrow is signing day and Louisville fans are acting like it is Christmas, Hanukkah, Easter, Fourth of July and the Winter Equinox all rolled into one. The reason being is that their beloved head coach Charlie Strong (nicknamed HCCS by the faithful) is pulling together the best class The Ville has had since the Steve Kragthorpe era. Or as I like to call it the Glory Days.

For Kentucky fans it's the polar opposite. We really aren't sure what to expect at this point. There has been a lot of decommitting, shuffling and transferring coming out of the Wildcat camp. The Joker Phillips era has not gotten off on the right foot it would seem. Let's check out some of the main stories before this "historic" signing day. The word historic is in quotes because Louisville fans think that this will be the day that their program becomes a national title contender. And I'm not kidding.

  • Original Kenticky verbal commit John Davis hasn't completely made up his mind and is waffeling between UK, Louisville (gag) and Illinois. He is a four star player according to ESPN and it would be nice to get a Kentucky boy. If we lose him to the Ville and Strong then we have a potential Calipari kicking Pitino's butt situation with Strong and Phillips. His commitment is big on principle alone.

  • DeMarcus Smith is a lifetime Cards fan, a local kid and is a three star QB according to Scout. He committed to the Cards and stuck with them through the Kragthorpe debacle. He reaffirmed his love for the Cards when Strong arrived and then Strong went and recruited four star quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, who is expected to sign tomorrow. Smith now is waffling between the Cards and Central Florida and has pushed back his signing day until Friday. The Card Chronicle started a rumor that UK was going to come after Smith, but that proved false. Way to go Mike Rutherford. In any event, the kid wants to play and competing for a starting job isn't something he is interested in. We will see how this turns out.

  • The Louisville Cardinals are ranked as the 19th overall signing class on ESPN.com. They have four 4 star recruits, fourteen 3 star recruits and three below 3 stars. Rivals has Louisville at 25 with five 4 star recruits, thirteen 3 star recruits, and the rest below 3 stars.

  • The Kentucky Wildcats are the first ones out of the top 25 according to ESPN.com. They have two 4 star recruits, fourteen 3 star recruits and 6 below 3 stars. Rivals doesn't have Kentucky listed in the top 50. Their rankings has UK having one four star and all the rest 3 stars except for one 2 star guy.

There you have it. There are a few things that I can gather from all of this: A). You never know how a guy will pan out but it is always good to have more higher ranked kids than lower ranked kids. B). Louisville and Kentucky's list of recruits aren't much different but Louisville does have the edge. C). Both teams will be full of young, unproven talent next year and I am glad the game is at our house. We will be starting a Junior at home and the Cards will more than likely be starting a true Freshman on the road. It's looking like we might need all the help we can get.

And now on to more imortant things like Kentucky basketball. The season is still going on, you know?
